Overall this TCAF was full of me feeling overwhelmed and excited at the same time. WHAT IS THIS FEELING????

UWAOO TCAF is over. It was a lot of fun and amazing. Got to see so many new and cool people :). Thank you to everyone who came out to the show to check out all the comics! I like that TCAF brings out a really diverse crowd of folks, and everyone can find something that suits their fancy!

I met Julie and Kim in Montreal a few years ago and I love them!! Glad I finally got to meet Wai as well. Love Love Hill is a bunch of talented cuties, and I love how prolific they are … there’s always new books to pick up every time I see them. Still can’t believe they go way back with Kris Mukai — small world!!

Hey guys! Ananth and I are gonna be at Toronto Comics Arts Festival this weekend! We’re gonna be tabling with Benign Kingdom somewhere in the the cluster of 218-221 up on the second floor.

The Atlantic: It sounds like you're saying that literary "talent" doesn't inoculate a writer—especially a male writer—from making gross, false misjudgments about gender. You'd think being a great writer would give you empathy and the ability to understand people who are unlike you—whether we're talking about gender or another category. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Junot Diaz: I think that unless you are actively, consciously working against the gravitational pull of the culture, you will predictably, thematically, create these sort of fucked-up representations. Without fail. The only way not to do them is to admit to yourself [that] you're fucked up, admit to yourself that you're not good at this shit, and to be conscious in the way that you create these characters. It's so funny what people call inspiration. I have so many young writers who're like, "Well I was inspired. This was my story." And I'm like, "OK. Sir, your inspiration for your stories is like every other male's inspiration for their stories: that the female is only in there to provide sexual service." There comes a time when this mythical inspiration is exposed for doing exactly what it's truthfully doing: to underscore and reinforce cultural structures, or I'd say, cultural asymmetry.

Like most of you, I’ve got a to-read stack that kills me every time I look at it. Friends laugh at it, small children cry at it, and the police keep giving me the stink eye. I’ve also got a to-read list for those things that I want to read in digital form, but haven’t yet. There’s a lot of webcomics in there (Chris Onstad returned to Achewoodlast year, you say?) and I’ve been remarkably lax about getting caught up because I’ve got a never-ending reservoir of excuses when it comes to not doing things. But I found myself with three volumes of the webcomic Johnny Wander, an inexplicably long commute to work, and a (very rare) lack of excuses. So I read it. And I loved it.

I’m David, and I want to talk to you about Johnny Wander, a comic drawn by Yuko Ota and written by Ananth Panagariya, about Yukond Ananth. It’s autobio, it’s funny, and it’s great.

If you were not aware, Ananth and I are currently posting pages from Lucky Penny over at Johnny Wander! This is a panel from page 60-something, but I was pleased with the inks and am sharing it with you now.

This was the second time I’d ever used SketchUp to do a panel layout. Just a buncha squares to show where furniture sat — but it was a fairly painless process, all things considered. And it saved me an incredible amount of time!

Omigosh I can finally share this! At SPX last year, I was asked to draw something including the words “TOO KAWAII TO LIVE, TOO SUGOI TO DIE.” Afterwards, Ananth and I asked if we could elaborate on the sketch and make it into some sorta design and then I did.

This is now available as both a tee and a print over at Topatoco if you’re interested! And there’s the rest of our store at Topatoco as well.

Bunch of new stuff up in the store! This design is our latest, and we brought back the ZooLOLogy and PaleontoLOLgy designs! And Johnny Wander V3 is up as well!

Our successfully Kickstarted book is now available for purchase from the fine folks at TopatoCo! Weighing in at over two pounds and 144 pages, it’s a three-piece cloth, over-sized hardcover that collects Tiny Kitten Teeth chapters none through two. It is re-mastered, re-lettered and features additional pages as well as character designs and back-up material. Each and every page was lovingly and painstakingly hand-painted in gouache.

It is the definitive collection of our comics work over the past number of years. We’re really proud of the book and we’d be overjoyed if you would take a look at it.

You can also get it with the Owltown crest patch, as well as a quick signed doodle from us! Thanks again for continuing to support our art and our work.

I laid this baby out! It’s a gorgeous book with a sturdy, handsome cover and a fabric binding in a lovely deep blue with silver print. The interior is on nice heavy paper and I think the printing really did Becky’s lush colors justice!
